CSA Box: Week of March 10th 2008

My sister and I went out for breakfast this morning at Victory's Banner and when I got back my CSA box was sitting on her doorstep! (Our building is a complicated system of foyers and back stairs with a confusing array of keys and nasty neighbors that throw your stuff away... so the CSA box lives there.)

These are the items that arrived:

4 Fuji apples
Lettuce
Tofu (made in Chicago!)
Kale
Garlic
Celery Root
Parsley
Onions (about 2 pounds - it was like Mary Poppin's purse and an onion field in that box)

I know this is really really exciting news to most of you. Even more exciting is it is 41 degrees outside!

Yay for the CSA box! We have been blessed by our garden which continued, to our surprise, to grow throughout the "winter" here. We have SO MUCH salad and enough chard, kale, etc. for several meals. It beats walking to the corner store or riding a few blocks down the street to the giant vegetarian co-op.... oh, how I appreciate the compact nature of SF!

I think we're going to start a community garden plot soon (it will be spearheaded by me, so I don't know if it qualifies as a "we" project yet).

Which reminds me that our friend Margaret from Chicago told us a horrifying story about how a demolition crew decided to bulldoze the community garden she belonged to while they were knocking down a perfectly good building in the next lot to build a condo. And there was tape strung up between the lots in preparation for just such an instance of confusion. We all know how difficult it is to tell the difference between an abandoned building and a community garden.

That is such a sad story! When things that you grow yourself get destroyed it touches a certain nerve that is crazy sad.

Good luck with your garden! I am sure it will have someone awesome looking after it taking care of the soil and all that so it will be very fantastic.

Seriously our garden plot in New Orleans last spring and summer was one of my most favorite things ever. I loved plodding over there before work when it was still cool outside and going back in the evening to check everything out.
